In my experience from working on and successfully managing some in the most visible projects more than the last 40 years, including the Apollo Program, the Trident Submarine, The Cruise Missile, computerization in the British Income Tax System, other major programs for some in the largest businesses in the globe along with the rescue of a $600M program for the UK Government, what Ive found is the fact that excellent challenge management processes and procedures have to not only be in place for projects to be effective but the Challenge Manager have to genuinely realize how and when to use them and modify them, if needed. Without a doubt, Challenge Managers have to realize and be experienced in the very difficult abilities of Planning, Organizing, Monitoring and Controlling their projects. PMI and PRINCE2 certification is certainly a really excellent method to find out these very difficult abilities. Even so, I feel that these very difficult abilities are only about 20% in the success equation.
The much bigger component in the equation, the 80%, are the soft abilities, the attitudes and behaviors, that the Challenge Manager need to have and practice. These soft abilities include, but are not necessarily limited to, enthusiasm, energy, commitment to success, commitment to excellence; excellent communication abilities – knowing what to say, when to say it, tips on how to say it and when to shut-up; excellent interpersonal abilities, approachability, self-motivation, the ability to motivate the challenge team, excellent team building abilities, a go-for-it attitude, a no-problem attitude, a go-the-extra-mile attitude and a excellent sense of humor. None of these soft abilities are really component in the PMBOK and arent really needed for PMP or PRINCE2 certification. Im a true believer in the song title, "It aint what you do, its the way that you do it."
By all means, I think potential challenge managers need to work to get a project management certificate because it will teach them the very difficult abilities foundations. But they shouldnt feel nor need to the PMI or the APMG continue advertising that certification makes a man or women a Challenge Manager. The real way plus the only method to being a true Challenge Manager and to lower the challenge failure rate is to ensure that our Challenge Managers are not only proficient in the very difficult abilities of Planning, Organizing, Monitoring, and Controlling their projects but that they, also, have and continue to practice the soft abilities.
